Well, we have yet to develop Insta-Extract Technology, but you can learn how to have one ready in about 24hrs.
Most herbal extract making recipes will tell you to dump This Amount of Herb + That Amount of Extract into a jar, put the lid on it, and then wait for two weeks.
And, while your at it, give it a good shake everyday. If you can remember. (I'm ashamed to admit I forgot a macerating extract for three whole months once. THREE!)
Percolation tinctures, on the other hand, give you a chance to play at being a mad scientist.
Basically, you mix a little herb and vodka, pack it into a glass bottle that's had the bottom end cut off (playing with glass and fire is FUN!!!!! . . . But that's another post).
Then you set the funnel upright in a large canning jar, pour in the required measurements of vodka, and let it sit overnight.
The next day, adjust the screw cap and drip, drip, drip- your extract will be ready in a few hours!
If you want the specifics, you can buy The Herbal Medicine Maker's Handbook and wade through all 9 very technical and detailed pages on this Arcane and Esoteric domain of the Advanced Herbalist and Why Percolation Tinctures are Awesome. My chapter subtitle, not the book author's, by the way ;)
Or you can sign up to be a Patron of the Herbal Arts and read the Patrons only blog post where I outline the whole concept in less than 700 words with pretty pictures. Your call!
Either way, you should definitely add this skill to your herbal tool chest. It's fun, entertaining, and you won't have to wait two weeks the next time you run out of your favorite extract or want to work with a new herb.
All the best,
